WeHo Legend, Publicist Lee Solters, Dies

West Hollywood, California (Thursday, May 21, 2009) - Word came from Jerry Digney on Monday that his partner, Lee Solter, age 89, the legendary publicist to the biggest of Broadway shows and most glittering Hollywood stars, passed away while in his West Hollywood home.

He died of natural causes, said Mr. Digney of Solters & Digney.

Mr. Solter plied the Great White Way during the 1960s’ representing the time’s biggest shows including “Guys and Dolls," “Funny Girl," “The King and I," “My Fair Lady" and plays by Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller and Neil Simon.

His client list included, at one time or another, Barbra Streisand, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, Cary Grant, Mae West and, most infamously, Frank Sinatra.

He repped the Muppets and the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, as well.

Described as a Damon Runyon-type, Mr. Solters was born in Brooklyn in 1919. After graduating from New York University, he served in the Army during World War II writing for the military newspaper Stars & Stripes. After the war, he started working in publicity firms, eventually heading some of the leading agencies in the business.

Mr. Solters' lineup also included Claudette Colbert, Gregory Peck, Carol Channing, talk show host Robert Q. Lewis, Dolly Parton, Whitney Houston, the Eagles, Yul Brynner, Broadway impresario David Merrick and 20th Century Fox owner Marvin Davis.

He is survived by his daughter, Susan Reynolds; his son, Larry Solters; his grandchildren, Jonah Reynolds and Maxie Solters; and his great-grandson, Elijah Reynolds.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Providence-Trinity Care Hospice Foundation, 2601 Airport Dr., Suite 230, Torrance, CA 90505. Funeral services are private.
